The First Four
Beatitudes
Matthew 5: 1-12
Luke 6:20-26

The Beatitudes begin the Sermon on the
Mount.  It is the first time Jesus Preaches a
sermon in the bible. He begins by
pronouncing various blessings on certain
people. These are called the Beatitudes.

The "Poor in Spirit" are talked about in
Matthew 5:3.   They are people that care
more about God's Calling than their own
ambitions.  People that do not mind being
poor or being rich.  That just want to be what
What God wants of them.  They are willing
to admit that others may have better ideas
sometimes.
If Christians do this they will experience
God's guiding hand on this earth even before
they get to heaven.  God will guide them and
sustain them.  They will not necessarily be
wealthy but they will have the satisfaction of
knowing that they are in the will of God.
How can we apply this teaching to our daily
lives.  There are numerous ways.   We can be
concerned about the lost.  We can be
concerned about missions.   We can also be
concerned about the needs of fellow
believers.  People that care more about God's
Calling than there own ambitions.

The bible then talks about "They that Mourn"
in Matthew 5:4.   This has to do with
somebody mourning for lost souls.  We should
be sad  people have chosen to live a life of sin
apart from God.   We should be compelled to
witness to people.  There is a promise in the
bible that God will comfort people that have a
burden for souls.   He might not immediately
but he will in the future.  I think of
missionaries that have gone to countries that
were very hostile to the gospel.   Some of
them never had a single convert.   It would
appear that they received very little comfort
in this life but their heavenly reward is great.
As a result of God working through them,
many of the countries that those missionaries
have labored in are experiencing great revival
now.  I can just see those missionaries in
Heaven looking down and being comforted by
that fact.
The Meek are talked about in Matthew 5:5
The word meek is often misunderstood.    It is
often  thought of as doing whatever people
want you to do when they demand it.  The
meaning, in reality, is somewhat different.   It
means approaching every situation with the
right attitude.   It also means looking at all
sides of a given situation.   It means not letting
your emotions get too you in any situation.
Being thankful to God despite the
circumstances.  Being meek has its rewards.
People will for the most part respect you.
Inheriting the Earth might imply that you
might have a smoother road here on earth.
When Christ comes, he will place the meek
over important aspects of his kingdom.
In Matthew 5:6, They That Hunger and Thirst
After Righteousness are discussed.  To hunger
and thirst after righteousness means to desire
to be holy.  In order to live Holy, a person has
to read the bible, since the bible tells a person
how to live.  The righteous people have drawn
so close to God that they love what he loves
and hate what he hates.
The righteous person will try to avoid
situations that can even be construed to be
sinful.
Hanging around alone with the opposite sex
when you are not married is an example of
this situation.   Trying to pay debts on time is
another example of this.
The righteous person will also see the affects
of sin and hate what it does to other people.
He should be concerned about the bondage
sin causes.
An example of this could be a person dying in
the hospital with lung cancer. There are other
habits such as alcohol and drugs that also
have devastating affects, not only on the
person doing them but also on their family
and friends.
The righteous person prays for people to quit
doing sin.  Jesus prayed that God would
deliver us from evil. We find This in The
Lord's Prayer.  We should believe that the
supernatural power of God can help people
overcome sin.
Now we get to the promise given to those
why hunger and thirst after righteousness.
The lord said that the lord will fill a person
with righteousness.  The Holy Spirit will
enable a person to live a Christian life.
